On Saturday we walked through the shady paths at Morrell Sanctuary. Through Tranquillity, up to Morrell Lake, back down and around the pond and then up and over Rocky Knoll.
It was a beautiful morning for a shady walk. The sunlight fell through the trees and dappled the greens around us.
The undergrowth was still lush green, though we could see that this long spell of dry weather was starting to brown up some of the mosses and grasses in the most open area’s.
It was a good day for squirrels. They chattered and scolded us as we walked under their trees and beside the feeding stations that had been created for them!
As we walked through Tranquility a red-headed woodpecker – a Pileated Woodpecker – was lazily working on a dead tree trunk. I was alerted to his presence by the wood chips dropping at my feet and the hollow thumping going on over my head. I had to circle the trunk a couple of times before I actually found him. But once found he stayed put while I tried to get a good picture!
Happy Walking – try to keep cool!
