The Magic of Water and Light!

Mist and light through the trees!

Water finding a way to escape its bounds!

We live on an Island and are Surrounded by Water and there is MAGIC there.

But there is more MAGIC in Water touched by Light.  Rainbows are the result of light being bent as it travels through the drops of water – the bending reveals all the colours of the rainbow.  Mist in the air bends light to soften edges and change colours – magical!

It has been raining here – a lot of rain – the usual and expected for this time of year.  The amazing thing about this kind of rain is the effect on our Waterways, the Rivers and Streams that criss-cross our Island.  I have been walking beside those Rivers and along those Streams the post couple of weeks.

We have been mostly lucky in that the heavy rains have been falling at night and then in the mornings the skies clear and we have fairly good days and sometimes even spectacular days!  I have taken advantage of those days to take some pictures of the Magic of Water and Light and even a few pictures of the Power that water can acquire with volume.

There is a huge difference between Englishman River just north of us and Millstone River right here in town.  Englishman is a large river distinguished by a very narrow canyon that the river has carved out over the centuries.  Englishman River was roaring through its canyon after the last big rain!  The air was thick with water – spray, mist and moisture!  The effect of the light on the mist, on the trees dripping with moisture was amazing!

We were walking fairly early in the morning – the sun was up and cascading down through the tree branches – the mist softened and bent edges.  The effects were magical!

Looking up and through - the edges are soft an blurry - water smoothes out the rough!

Millstone River is quieter, more civilized.  This river usually moves quietly through the city, a cool note in the center of town – giving Bowen Park a wonderful selection of spots for photographers, picnics  and weddings!

I hope that you enjoy the walks!  Today we are trying out a new walk – over a suspension bridge – I will let know how that goes.

Happy Viewing

I work to create interesting surface textures with differing stitch patterns and often embellish with beads or buttons. I have designed for Buffalo Wool Co, Vogue Knitting, Zealana, Malabrigo and others. But mostly I design for myself and my LYS. I have worked full time at Mad About Ewe Fine Yarns for over 20 years and started my design process as a method of creating patterns that featured teachable knitting techniques. Everything has grown from those patterns.
